History of Valentine's day

Originally Valentine's Day (all eleven of them) was a celebration of the deaths of early Christians. In recent history, the first recorded link between romance and February the 14th is by Geoffrey Chaucer in a poem 'Parlement of Foules' in 1382.

This poem was written to honour the first anniversary of the engagement of King Richard II of England to Anne of Bohemia.  (They say people get married to young these days but back then they were both only 14!)

Later in the 15th century the 'High Court of Love' was established in Paris (Where else?)  The court dealt with love contracts, betrayals, and violence against women. Judges were selected by women on the basis of a poetry reading.

The earliest surviving valentine (or hand written love note) also dates from 15th century...
Je suis desja d'amour tanne
Ma tres doulce Valentinee...
Written by Charles, Duke of Orleans to his 'valentined' wife whilst he was imprisoned in the Tower of London following his capture at the Battle of Agincourt, 1415.

The reinvention of Saint Valentine's Day in the 19th century was in the United States where the first mass-produced valentines of embossed paper lace were produced and sold shortly after 1847 by Esther Howland (1828-1904) of Worcester, Massachusetts. Her father operated a large book and stationery store and she took her inspiration from an English valentine she had received.

In the second half of the 20th century, the practice of exchanging cards was extended to all manner of gifts, usually from a man to a woman.  Such gifts typically include roses and chocolates.  In the 1980s, the diamond industry began to promote Valentine's Day as an occasion for giving jewellery, especially diamonds.
